Me-Made-May 2018!

It's time to sign up for Me-Made-May again!  Details for this year's challenge can be found here.

Here is my pledge:

I, Star of www.starsthreads.blogspot.com sign-up as a participant of Me-Made-May '18.  I will endeavor to wear at least one me-made, me-altered, or me-upcycled garment per day for the entire month without wearing a garment twice.  I tend to wear the same things over and over again so hopefully this will bring out some garments that have been hiding in the back of my closet.

I'll be posting my daily wears on Instagram.  You can follow me @starsthreads or by clicking here.

Just a quick post today!  Hope to see everyone on Saturday at the Garage Sale!

Happy sewing everyone!

Matilda #2

To say I liked my first version of Matilda by Megan Nielsen would be an understatement.  I L-O-V-E this dress! I love it so much that I immediately cut out Matilda #2 after completing the first one.  And here she is!

This purple print is a Robert Talbott cotton that I purchased at the small store in Carmel Valley, CA a number of years ago.  The last time I went there, they were no longer selling fabric so I am now starting to near the end of my current Robert Talbott stock.

The fabric is a shirting cotton that's a little on the stiff side, but I'm hoping after a few washes it will soften up a bit.

The buttons I had in my stash and they match perfectly.  My shoes - well - not such a perfect match, but it's close!

And guess what - Matilda #3 was just cut out this morning!  What's that saying about when you find something you like, buy/make it in every color?  Well, this could be my go-to dress.  I know I've mentioned in the past that I'm not much of a floral person, but I recently purchased this print at a quilting sale and I really like it!  It was screaming "Matilda" at me when I saw it so I just had to snap it up! A bit of piecing will be needed on the skirt panels and I had to omit the pockets on this one as I didn't have enough yardage, but it should still turn out ok.

Latest Stashbustin' Stats:

Yardage for this dress = 4.375 yards
YTD yards sewn = 34.375 yards
Remaining yardage to reach 100 yard goal = 65.625 yards

Other happenings in the sewing room:

One of my "fun" goals for this year is to re-do my sewing room - new curtains, new paint, a few new tables.  I've been searching for months now for some fabric for new curtains and I think I may have just found it.  I currently have this entire bolt on loan from Triad Fabrics.....

Here's a close up - kinda looks like pattern pieces with stitching lines?

I think I like it!  Stay tuned....this could be the one!

Happy sewing everyone!

Get there early as the line starts forming at about 8:00 am!

If you would like to sell some of your own items, please click on this link for more information.

After my big stash clean-out and re-org, I am selling a total of 171 items - which includes 145+ yards of fabric.

I've already boxed up everything I plan on selling this year before taking pics, but I thought I would show some of the garments I've made this past year from previous garage sale fabric purchases.  You can find some great fabrics at the sale!!!

Butterick 6377.  Three of these fabrics were purchased at the garage sale.

Vogue 1233.  Both the outer fabric and the lining were from the garage sale.

And my latest creation, Butterick 6168.

These are just a few of the garments I made this year using garage sale fabric.  You never know what you will find at the sale, but I'm going to try to contain myself this year.  Yeah right - who am I kidding there!  We'll see what I find!

Hope to see you there!

Happy sewing everyone!

Butterick 6168 - A little too sweet for me?

Here is my finished Butterick 6168 - a Lisette dress.  I like the dress itself, but I think the print may be a little too on the "sweet floralish" side for me.

The fabric is a light green rayon with a cream leaf print on it.  I picked it up at the Sewing Garage Sale a few years ago and finally paired it with this pattern.

Note to self - don't take pics in the bright sunshine - it's too hard to look at the camera!

I fully lined the dress with a cream bemberg rayon that just feels glorious on your skin.

I like the little tab in the front....

And the pleats and cross over style of the bodice.  I'm just not sure the entire garment is really my style.

I'll wear a few times and then determine it's final outcome.  Anyways, this will knock a few more yards off of the stash!  Here are my latest stats:

Latest Stashbustin' Stats:

Yardage for this dress (including lining) = 3.75 yards
YTD yards sewn = 30 yards
Remaining yardage to reach 100 yard goal = 70 yards

Happy sewing everyone!

The Stash is Sorted! And an update on other goals for the year....

Part of my sewing goals for this year was to sort thru my current fabric stash and add every remaining fabric to the Cora app.  I can happily say - this is now done!  A big check mark for me!

This process took approximately 2 1/2 months to complete.  Knowing this was going to be a sorting frenzy, I set myself some initial criteria before diving in.

  • If I couldn't envision a garment/project out of the fabric, it was added to the "sale" pile.  If the fabric passed this stage, it was photographed, measured and added to the Cora app on my phone.
  • If it was less than 1 yard, further scrutiny was required and it was added to a scrap bin.
  • If it was a lining, it was measured, rolled and placed in a separate lining bin.  The measurement was written on a sticky note and pinned to the fabric.  Lining pieces weren't added to the Cora app though.  This is because I've never looked at a piece of lining and thought, hmm, I wonder what I can make out of this.  Instead, I start by looking at the fashion fabric and then figure out if I have a matching lining.
  • If it was a muslin type fabric, it was rolled onto a bolt and not cataloged either.
  • Finally the scrap bins were sorted.  Out of the 8 scrap bins I started with, I now only have 1 bin - which is filled with scraps I can honestly see using in the future.  The rest of the scraps are in the "sale" pile, organized by color.

So how much fabric do I currently have according to Cora?  Here's a screen shot of my current stash:

Yes - that's 291.36 yards of fabric in the current stash.  I will be selling a total of 145 yards at the sewing garage sale at the end of this month so that's a total of 436.36 yards that was crammed into my little closet!  No wonder it was such a mess!

Before:

I had some sort or organization going on here - cottons and linens were grouped together, and all of my linings were in the pile to the far left - but if you pulled anything out, the entire pile would fall apart....

More before pics - knits were intermixed with other fabrics and wools were mixed with polar fleece....

All eight of these scrap bins were full.....

After:

On the top row, I have wools and other thick fabrics.  The bottom row consists of Christmas prints/panels on the far right, followed by 3 stacks of cottons and 1 stack of linen.

Now to the untrained eye (like my Mom's), I'm sure they will be saying "I don't see any difference!"  Oh, but there is a huge difference!  It's organized and labeled!  I love me a good label - you should see my spice drawers!  Here are my 3 stacks of knits on the bottom, athletic material and rayons on the top shelf.

Ahhh - organizational bliss here!  The plastic bins hold all of my ribbons, trims, bias tapes, etc. all sorted by color.  The 3 polka dot bins hold the current projects  I am working on.

Here's the scrap bin - with a label of course!

And my lining bin....

All linings are rolled with a post-it note safety pinned showing the length and width.

Here's the lining and scrap bins on their shelf in the closet.  Above them are plastic containers holding all of my zippers (sorted by color of course!).

Fabric Sorting Conclusion:

It feels great to have all of my stash sorted and organized.  I found using the Cora app very easy and useful.  Now instead of seeing a fabric in the stash and wondering how much yardage I have, I can just pull up the app and look it up!  I have so many projects in mind too since sorting the stash, I think I need to take a few months off just to sew them all up.  I wonder if the boss would be ok with that????

My goals for the year and progress so far:

Garments to tackle:
Jeans - In process - the pattern is traced and cut out!
Pants
Bras
- Something reversible
- Sew more Burda patterns

Using up the stash:
- Sew 100 yards this year - In process! Currently at 26.25 yards sewn.
- Sort thru scraps - Done!
- Sort thru all of my current stash.  Add all of the remaining pieces to the "Cora" app. - Done!

Tracking:
- Track how much fabric I use/buy. - In process!
- Track spending. - In process!
- Track my pattern usage. - In process!

For fun:
- Redecorate the sewing room this year. - In process - currently trying to find some fabric for new curtains.

That's it for me today!  It's been a very productive few months so far this year.

Happy sewing everyone!

P.S. - here are my spice drawers.....
