I decided to make my favorite skirt again for the September MAGAM Challenge. The theme for this month is "Shirty, Skirty" - meaning make either a shirt or a skirt or both! Sorry, I didn't post my original plans to start with but here's the finished product! This is Burda 7342 made from a nice red wool crepe I had in the stash.
I have made this skirt multiple times and still love it! It has a nice twirl factor that isn't too revealing.....
And those mock pocket flaps in the front add a nice bit of interest.
Here is is on the dress form under less windy conditions.
Side view.
Back view with an invisible zipper.
The lining is a super soft silky feeling print (probably polyester), that also came from the stash. Don't you just love the cherry print!
And voila - the back with hand stitched lining along the invisible zipper.
For everyone following my stashbustin' quest - here are the latest stats:
Yardage for this skirt:
2.375 yards of red crepe
2.375 yards of lining
Total for this skirt = 4.75 yards
Total YTD = 65.41 yards
Happy sewing everyone!

Burda 7342 #2!
This could be my favorite skirt pattern. This is the second one I have made and absolutely love it. Burda 7342. The first one I made earlier this year out of a nice wool plaid. This version is made from a piece of black crepe I had in the stash. I did some topstitching along the top edges and the mock pocket flap edges.
And of course I had to throw in a wild lining trimmed with some ribbon from the stash. The lining is a piece of polyester that I bought at a fabric store in Eureka, California (sorry, I can't remember the name of the store!) that sells fabric on consignment - what a concept!! So if you happen recognize the piece below, it could have been yours! Here's the back views inside and out....
And fronts inside and out....
And a close-up of the topstitching. Sorry - the picture is a little blurry.
And here's a close-up of the ribbon trim I used between the top yoke and the skirt pieces on the inside. It's a very nice woven ribbon that was sewn-on by hand.
Just a quick post today but here are the latest statshbustin' stats for me:
Yardage for this skirt = 4.375
YTD = 20 yards!
Happy sewing everyone!

Burda "French" Skirt with Godet
This skirt is from the Burda Magazine - August 2012 issue - #112. I call it my "French" skirt because I remember this issue of the magazine was focusing on French style at the time. I've made this skirt twice before using a plain black wool and a woven plaid wool. This version however, has been lurking in the closet as a UFO in the project bin for quite awhile.
I'm not sure why it took me so long to finish because I found the perfect piece of jewelry to compliment it a few years ago.... I mean really - could a necklace match better than this with all of those different colors??
The skirt is fully lined. I used a plain black rayon lining on this one so nothing fancy this time to show on the inside.
I made this skirt about 2 inches shorter than my other two versions. Here's a comparison of all three skirts. Black one is a bit wrinkly from being smashed in the closet....
On the plaid skirt, I used a reverse on the godet portion too.
I'm counting this towards the stashbustin total too. Total guesstimate on the yardage is 1.5 for the skirt and 1.5 for the lining = 3 yards total for the skirt. This brings the YTD total to 7.375 yards. A bit of a slow start to the year, but I'm getting there.
That's it for now.

I bought the "fabric" from a thrift store and at the time, it was a women's jumpsuit. Here's the right side of the fabric - rather boring I think...
When I looked at the inside of the jumpsuit - this is what the wrong side looked like - much, much more interesting.
There are so many colors in the skirt, the color pairing options are endless. Here it is with a purple sweater and McCall's 6844 cardigan.
The skirt pattern is a variation on a pencil skirt. You can see from the back the pencil shape. The godet added to the front gives it more room to move than the average pencil skirt.
I decided to cut the godet fabric against the grainline to add a little more interest. Sorry - it's a bit wrinkly but this is after wearing it all day at work.

Voila! Another completed alien!!

January MAGAM - Burda 7342 - Feelin' Kinda' Scottish?
My January MAGAM is a plaid skirt using Burda 7342. I LOVE THIS PATTERN!!!! In fact I like this pattern so much, I already have skirt #2 cut out! It will be a basic black skirt with white topstitching.
I got a little carried away with the fabric and decided to make a matching scarf.
I'll probably wear a black sweater with this rather than the turtleneck below - the turtleneck is a bit baggy....
Here's the skirt on Elizabeth. The skirt took a few hours to lay out due to the plaid and wanting everything to line-up. Also - there were two flaws in the fabric that I needed to work around. As you can see, the front and back skirt portions are cut on the bias.
The right side plaid lines up, but the blue and gray plaid lines are alternating. I think because the plaid isn't a mirror image of itself, I couldn't get this one side to line up properly. The black lines are correct though.
The sides line-up:
The mock pocket flaps line-up:
Here's the back view:
After alot of pining, my invisible zipper lined up perfectly.
The left side plaids line up perfectly.
And here is Elizabeth sporting her new outfit - I think she likes it too!
I had some black fringey stuff left over from another project so I added it to the bottom of the scarf.
The lining is comprised of three different materials - a cotton on the top, a rayon on the bottom with a trim from the stash hand sewn between the two.
Here's the back view:
I first tried the to use the floral trim from above on the hemline, but it ended up being too stiff so I replaced it with some lace hem trim and it lays much better now.
Total yardage for this skirt = 4.375 yards. Not a bad start to stashbustin 2016!
And, drum roll please......
I finished an alien project too! Remember this blouse? All I had to do is resew one of the button stacks and lower the armholes 1" each side. Done! One alien down, too many to go, but it's a start! My project wall now has a little more room on it.
Happy Sewing everyone!
